I use a plastic potholder ring (from Kmart) and put it between the mouth and center sections of the recorder (3-piece instrument). To that, I tie on the appropriate ribbon that goes around their neck, then the Recorder Karate ribbons go on it. They are purchased by the children for 50 cents, and the money goes to buy new recorder music. For those children who don't have the ring, I tie the ribbon on the bell of the instrument, but it doesn't stay on nearly as well. Walmart also sells the rings - they must be 1 1/8" to fit the recorder. The ribbon around their neck frees up their hands, so they can play xylophones, etc. I use 1/8" ribbon and it is available in many colors at Walmart, ACMoore, Michael's and many other craft or fabric stores. They are a big hit.
