Performance time: approximately 40 minutes
CAST OF CHARACTERS (in order of appearance) and COSTUMES:
- Narrators: At least two, though director may wish to use a different pair of narrators for each scene, or a different person for each line (48 in all). Narrators may be seated in large comfortable upholstered chairs or on stools on either side of the stage or in the pit area. They may read from a large book(s) with A Christmas Carol printed on the cover(s), from note/index cards, or they may memorize their lines.
- Ebenezer Scrooge: The lead. Wretched, crusty old man. Dark-colored pants, jacket with shirt. A bit disheveled, as he wears the same outfit basically everyday. Wears spectacles (opt.). Later, puts on dressing gown, slippers, and a nightcap. Major speaking and singing role.
- Bob Cratchit: Scrooge's longtime male employee. Rather poor, but a hard worker. Wears neat, worn-out shirt and pants, white scarf, glasses (opt.). Speaking and singing role.
- Fred: Scrooge's nephew. Handsome, sparkling eyes, nicely dressed. Speaking and singing role.
- Charity Volunteers: Male or female, at least three (with speaking lines near the end). Professional dress, wearing jackets or vests. All sing.
- Carolers: Any number, wearing colorful scarves and hats. All sing.
- Jacob Marley: Ghost of Jacob Marley, Scrooge's former business partner, male. Long hair pulled back, wearing a dark jacket and pants with boots, a kerchief bound around his head and chin, chains around his waist. Deep, resonant voice. Speaking role.
- Ghost Past: Male or female. Long white hair, wears a white tunic trimmed with summer flowers, lustrous belt at waist, holding branch of green holly. Voice soft and gentle. Speaking role.
- Fezziwig Family: Mr., Mrs., and three daughters, dressed up for a party. Sing.
- Partygoers: In script, calls for fiddler, housemaid, baker, cook, milkman, plus "men and women employed in the business" dressed up for a party. Add as many people as desired. Sing.
- Ghost Present: Male or female. Wearing simple deep green robe bordered with white fur trim, holly wreath on head, dark brown curls, joyful air about him/her. Speaking role.
- Cratchit Family: Includes Mrs. Cratchit (duet, speaking lines), Tiny Tim (solo, speaking lines, carrying a crutch), and as many brothers and sisters as desired. All are dressed cleanly, though clothes are definitely well-worn, well-washed hand-me-downs. All sing.
- Sarah: Fred's wife. Dressed up to host dinner party. Speaking and singing role.
- Guests: Fred and Sarah's dinner party guests, who performed carols. Dressy party clothes. As many people as desired. Sing.
- Ghost Future: Male or female. Wears long black robe with hood, tall with a stately appearance. No speaking lines.
- Townspeople (Chorus): Any number, male or female. Four with speaking lines. Wear jackets, vests, and hats - dressed for chilly winter weather. All sing.
- Youngster: One, male or female. Wears heavy sweater and pants, cap on head. Speaking role.
