The Ways Of The Seasons
by Teresa Jennings
Haunting and thought-provoking are the words that come to mind when we hear this tune. The message is poetic, yet philosophical. Students are not really old enough to feel the depth of the sentiment, "the only thing certain is change," but teachers and parents certainly will be.
Set in a Celtic rock style, the song is written in 4/4, but has a halftime feel to it. Part 1 is not particularly difficult and most of your students should be able to learn it readily. Part 2 is a little more challenging, but it is optional. It works very nicely with part 1 the second time through the song. If you would like to use it, but don't feel you have capable singers, consider asking "outsiders" - that is, older students, even other teachers or parents. Or perhaps treat it as a solo line for one talented individual to sing.
You will note that we chose to begin with a soloist on the recording (Missy Schott). We had the chorus enter at the pick-ups to measure 14 and remain in until the very end, when the soloist finishes the piece. The use of a soloist is also optional, but it is a nice opportunity for a young singer. Here is another idea: Turn the whole song into a duet. Pick two singers and let them alternate solo lines, then have one of them sing part 1 the second time through, and the other sing part 2.
The piano part works nicely as a live accompaniment, but the recording really makes the tune come to life with the Celtic flavor. You will hear hand drum (bodhran), tambourine, 12-string guitar, acoustic piano, solo cello, bass, drums, strings, and of course, penny whistle. Together, they blend into a mellow and atmospheric setting.
