Partner Warm-Up #3
by Teresa Jennings
The third in a series of partner warm-ups, this is written for older students, despite its somewhat "youthful" quality. Both parts are introduced separately, then combined, as with most partner songs. Part 2 is written in bass clef and is meant to be performed by lower, changing, or changed voices.
This warm-up emphasizes enunciation, sliding pitches, and diphthongs. It should not be sung sweetly. In fact, the "meows" of part 1 in particular should be quite nasal and harsh as a result of very open and moving mouths. Don't let students worry about what they look like when they sing! Results are what you're going for.
Part 2 is not as busy as part 1, reasoning that just getting those singers to join in will be a challenge. Also reasoning that employing humor might get them to participate, we've allowed them to sing with a certain defiance. (Which ultimately leads to them doing exactly what they say they won't.) We're hoping the addition of the "special effects" on the CD add to their enjoyment of the warm-up. But you could play your own piano part (good luck) and have your own live, um, cows and cats.
